Short Guide to visit the Underwater Museum in Cancun

The Cancun Underwater Museum of Art (MUSA), one of the most successful marine conservation projects in the world, MUSA is one of Cancun´s top 5 attractions. The Cancun Underwater Museum (MUSA) is located in the crystal clear waters surrounding Cancun and the coast of Isla Mujeres and has over 500 life-size underwater sculptures used to promote coral life.

The underwater sculptures are created with ph neutral marine concrete, made with the help of marine park officials and the Cancun Nautical Association, and are created above ground and cleaned before being taken underwater so they do not have any chemicals on them that may harm the water, animals, or reef.

The Cancun Underwater Museum is only 30 ft (10 meters) what makes a perfect dive for beginners, certified divers and shallow enough to have a great snorkeling experience

Why are there statues underwater in Cancun?

The project was launched in 2009, had the goal to create an artificial reef to protect the Manchones Reef area, and help the marine life restoration in the Cancun and Isla Mujeres area.

Where is the Cancun Underwater Museum located?

The Cancun Underwater Museum has 3 main areas, one in the Puerto Juarez area, one in Punta Nizuc and the main set is between Cancun and Isla Mujeres, here is where we do our activities since is the one with the largest number of statues and variety of marine life

How to visit the Underwater Museum in Cancun?

In Solo Buceo Dive Shop we have 3 options, if you are a certified diver we have a diving tour to this amazing scuba diving site, if you don't have a scuba diving certification you can take a diving lesson for beginner and join us for a MUSA dive or you can also do a Snorkeling Tour in the Museum area and enjoy the magnificent view from the surface. In all our services we include the visit to Manchones coral reef.

MUSA Cancun Underwater Museum of Art History

The Cancun Underwater Museum (Spanish: Museo Subacuático de Arte, known as MUSA) is a non-profit organization based in Cancún, Mexico devoted to the art of conservation. The museum has a total of 500 underwater sculptures, most by the British sculptor Jason DeCaires Taylor and the others by five Mexican sculptors, with three different galleries submerged between three and six meters (9.8 and 19.6 ft ) deep in the ocean at the Cancún National Marine Park.
The museum was thought up by Marine Park Director Jaime Gonzalez Canto and Jason deCaires Taylor, with the objective of saving the nearby coral reefs by providing an alternative destination for divers. It was started in 2009 and officially opened in November 2010 with the main obetive of protecting the Manchones Reef area.

In Solo Buceo Cancun we only visit the Underwater Museum's main area located near Isla Mujeres. Tis area contains the wolrd famous Silent Evolution.

Important tips before you visit MUSA Cancun

  • Make sure you have a good meal well before you’re scheduled to be in the water
  • Only wear eco-friendly sunscreen and/or insect repellent lotions
  • Take some cash, preferably pesos, to tip tour guides
  • This would be an excellent opportunity to invest in a waterproof camera if you want to take underwater pictures
  • Book with time, this is a service with very high demand and we have limted spots per day due boat capacity
  • Avoid touching the underwater sculptures or disturbing the marine life. Observing the rules and conservation protocols will make your tour a more enjoyable experience
